About the teachers:

Julie Pelikan, Growing up near the ocean, rivers, and lakes, her passion for water started at a young age. It has infused her daily life, whether it's a sunrise meditation at the beach or a long paddle in the coastal waterways, her love for the elements has created a foundation for her lifestyle. Being a certified yoga instructor, naturally Julie was excited to try a SUP Yoga class as another fun way to enjoy the great outdoors. After her first class Julie knew she must share this experience with others. Julie is a long-time resident of Wrightsville Beach and has extensive knowledge of the local waterways and weather patterns, as well as water safety and water rescue training. As the Senior SUP Yoga teacher for Longwave Yoga, Julie has apprenticed and co-facilitated the Longwave SUP Yoga Teacher Training Program since it's conception in 2014. Julie has ran countless adventures out on the water and has helped yogis discover the love of paddling, and paddlers discover a love for yoga. As Julie guides you not only on the water, but also through a yoga asana class on your floating yoga mat, expect to be challenged in the best of ways and be prepared to discover the true present moment within the elements.

Jarrod Covington, owner and found of Wrightsville SUP was born in Beaufort, NC, Jarrod Covington has spent his life on the water. Although surfing and windsurfing were constants in that childhood, his interests quickly expanded to include kiteboarding, paddle boarding, fishing, and a great deal more.

Covington graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in Finance, but ever loyal to the southeastern coast, he walked away from the corporate grind. Forecasting the potential for SUP growth in the area, he founded Wrightsville SUP in 2011. The business has thrived on Covington’s own dynamic and multi-faceted interests and now facilitates rentals and lessons in a variety of water sports and activities.

Modern Stories, Ancient Yoga: Yoga and Literature Series with Rebecca Warfield Mon, Nov 6, 2017 at 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm

The study of language and literature is an important facet of yoga. In fact, sutra 2.44 in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali— svadhyaya ishta samprayogah— states, “By study of spiritual books comes communion with one’s chosen deity.” In other words, to read and study books of philosophical or spiritual significance, one can come closer to his or her personal Truth.

Modern thinkers, writers, and yogis have adapted the ancient teachings of yoga into new and accessible forms. In fact, many contemporary pieces of literature have woven yoga’s teachings into artful pieces of literature. In this bi-monthly event, we will gather together in practice and satsang to explore, analyze, and discuss the teachings of yoga in modern literature. In this winter series, Rebecca Warfield will facilitate discussion, inquiry, and analysis pertaining to the month's selected book. Additionally, she will guide participants through asana related to the book's theme and intention. After each meeting, all participants will be added to a private, social media forum to continue their conversations and studies of the text outside of the meeting time.

Rebecca holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English Literature and has taught college-level literature for a decade. Therefore, participants can expect this event to include an accessible combination of intertextual references to ancient literature, prepared handouts, mini-lectures pertaining to relevant literary theory, digital presentations, journal questions, guided discussion, and open dialogue.

We will meet once, every other month. All levels welcome! Participants must purchase own copy of book. Please bring the book with you to the workshop. Participants should read and annotate the text before coming to the event. Please, come with questions, ideas, and a sense of adventure!

About Thai Massage:

Thai Massage is unique in the massage world, with it's combination of massage and stretching. Described as 'lazy's man's yoga' in Thailand, it is a luxury to be taken care of while you receive a stretch. Using various methods including palming, (a gradual pressure into the muscles) in a rhythmic sequence along the limbs of the body, Thai Massage is surprisingly deeply relaxing for the nervous system. The Sen lines, or subtle energy lines are believed to be the underlying pathways where blockages can occur. Imagine highways with intersections flowing along and then some roadwork or an accident - where your body has been overworked or perhaps damaged. Thai Massage helps release those blockages and clear the pathways for optimal circulation and energy flow. Thai Massage is both subtle and deep, outwardly felt as a wonderful gift and subconsciously received as a deep healing.

Rachael has been studying, teaching and practicing Thai Massage for over half her life! She teaches and practices yoga regularly and passionately; eats a healthy vegan diet, enjoys her family, makes art and dances. Although she keeps busy attending to many interests, Rachael thinks it's important to schedule in downtime, allow for the unexpected, and give freedom and self-care it's due time in our busy daily lives. Modern Stories, Ancient Yoga: Yoga and Literature Series with Rebecca Warfield Mon, Jan 8, 2018 at 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm
