Pose of the Month - Shakti Mudra



Though poses and mudras differ, what we love about mudras is they can be used in practically any pose throughout your practice. A mudra is a symbolic or ritual gesture that channels specific energy. Shakti mudra honors is believed to influence the second chakra, Svadishthana. If is frequently described as a feminine mudra due to it energetic influence on in the sacral and pelvic area. It is here, in the second chakra, that we honor our deepest creative capacities. Thus, using this mudra can help us connect to the creative Divine Mother within us all. Shakti mudra can be used in any postures, but we using it in meditative poses such as padmasana (lotus) or with pelvic-opening poses such as malasana (garland pose) or utkata konasana (goddess).

Step-By-Step Instructions:

1. Place your palms in front of your chest

2. Connect the pads of the pinky and ring fingers together.

3. Fold your thumbs into the palms and wrap the index and middle fingers around the thumb

4. Press the knuckles of the index and middle fingers together

5. Optional: Lower the hands to just below the navel.

Contraindications:

Overuse of Shakti mudra is thought to cause lethargy.
