THIS SUMMER, TAKE YOUR YOGA PRACTICE OUTSIDE!
We love our yoga studio, but now that warm weather is finally here we’re ready to break free of those familiar four walls and infuse our practice with a breath of fresh air—literally! This summer, you’ll find Longwave Yoga spread out across Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Whether we’re holding tree pose under the Airlie Oak, gazing at the Atlantic Ocean during Warrior II, or balancing in headstand on a SUP board, we’ll be taking our practice to new places and having fun while doing it. Won’t you join us?
The Benefits of Practicing Yoga Outdoors
If you’ve never practiced yoga beneath a blue sky, you might be surprised to learn that the benefits of practicing yoga outdoors are numerous—especially in Wilmington! For example: It’s an amazing way to get up close and personal with our gorgeous coastal city. Not everyone is lucky enough to live right next to the ocean!
The wind in the trees. Waves lapping at the shore. Who needs a stereo system when you’ve got the Mother Nature’s soundtrack?
Hello, Vitamin D!
Saluting the sun is a lot easier when it’s right above you. Just make sure to wear sunblock, especially if you burn easily. Everything in moderation, even sunshine!
Savasana never felt so good!
There’s nothing quite like a hot and sweaty SUPY class—especially when you can end Savasana by rolling off your board and plunging directly into that cool ocean water.
Anything can happen.
The studio is a predictable space and you know more or less what to expect when you show up for a class. The same cannot be said for the great outdoors. The sand will shift beneath your feet, a gust of wind might come out of nowhere, waves will wash over your paddleboard, it might even start to rain. While some of these natural events might cause you to fall out of a pose or feel a moment of discomfort, they’re also challenging and exciting, and will bring new life to your practice. Have we convinced you to take your practice outside this summer? If so, you’re in luck—Longwave Yoga is offering three outdoor options!
Yoga at Airlie Gardens
Celebrate Earth Day, April 22, in gratitude for Mother Nature with yoga on the Great Oak Lawn at Airlie Gardens, one of Wilmington's most beautiful attractions. This class is sure to be fun for all, beginners and experienced yogis. Bring your mat and/or towel. And stick around after to join our Airlie Garden friends in making a seed bomb to take home and plant after class.
Following Earth Day, we will begin a special four-week Yoga in the Gardens series every Tuesday at 8AM, beginning on May 1. Classes will take place at Airlie Gardens. After moving through your practice while enjoying it's breathtaking combination of formal gardens, wildlife, walking trails, sculptures, views of Bradley Creek, freshwater lakes, azaleas and the grandeur of the 467-year-old Airlie Oak, yoga won’t ever be the same.
Seaside Yoga at Blockade Runner
Wrightsville Beach is one of the most beautiful and serene beaches in the United States. After class, you can go for a swim or a long walk on the beach, enjoying and embracing the best of our coastal culture. Limited space available, preregistration recommended.
SUP Yoga on the Water
Let the ocean be your yoga mat, and sign up for a SUP yoga class this summer! SUP Yoga classes are held soundside at Blockade Runner. In our opinion it's one of the best things to do in Wrightsville Beach, NC and an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Not only is SUP Yoga a challenge that requires balance, focus, and strength, but it can also be a transformative experience. After all, the ocean is life giving, wild, and free, and by practicing yoga on it’s smooth surface (and maybe even falling in during choppier days) you will experience a deep and close connection with the world around you.
